The recipients of the Eleanor J. Mathews
Art Scholarship Awards were honored at Altrusa's March dinner
meeting. The recipients of the art awards were: Patricia
(Trish) Whidby, of Seminole Community College; Jennifer (Jen)
O'Malley, of the University of Central Florida; Summer Clancy, of Valencia
Community College, and Jane Ahlering of Rollins College.
The Eleanor J. Mathews Art Scholarship
Fund was established under the Will of Miss Mathews. The income from
her bequest is awarded annually to art students from the Central Florida
educational institutions. The Fund is administered by Altrusa
International, Inc., of Orlando-Winter Park, of which Miss Matthews was a
member. The scholarships are awarded by the art faculty of each
institution. To date, over $60,000 has been awarded to students.
Eleanor J. Mathews received her early
art training from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, graduated from the Art
Institute of Chicago and did graduate work at the University of
Wisconsin. She also studied at the Saugatuck, Michigan School of
Painting. She was a member of the honorary art society, Delta Phi
Delta. She worked in commercial art and interior design, and her
paintings were exhibited at numerous one-woman shows throughout the
country.
