When the request came from Pam Navey, Vice President of Altrusa of Statesville, North Carolina, our Altrusans jumped into action
and provided a pizza party for the children of the SHAKE program.
SHAKE -- Success Helps All Kids Excel -- is an
after-school and summer enrichment program. It serves students
in 3rd through 8th grade that live in one of the poorest communities
in Statesville. Altrusa of Statesville
is a supporter of this wonderful program.
The yearlong incentive for these students is a trip to
Epcot and the Kennedy Space Center. Students earn this trip by
attending on a regular basis, having good behavior, participating in planned
activities and doing well in school.
These students have been participating in a NASA project
at a local college and have been involved in some robotics activities.
A visit to the Kennedy Space Center must have been a thrill. The
perfect ending for such a day was a pizza party provided by Orlando-Winter
Park Altrusans! Altrusans provided soda and pizza, as well as cookies
and brownies for dessert.
Past President Carol Halliburton presented the SHAKE
Program Director, Mamie Houston, with a poster signed by Astronaut Story
Musgrave! Also, magician Hareed Hudini provided entertainment.
Congratulations to Altrusans of Orlando-Winter Park and
Statesville for making a difference in the life of a child!
