Altrusans spent October 28, 2006 -- Make A Difference Day
-- with the children at Great Oaks Village*.
Martha Kirby read two books -- Pumpkin Town and
Peace -- to the children. Afterward, each child was given
an 8" x 8" square of material and asked to decorate the square with a
depiction of why they love to read or a favorite book character. Armed
with fabric markers and creative imaginations, the children went to work!
It was incredible how even the children who were
initially hesitant to participate did a terrific job in decorating their
square. The squares were tied together with colorful ribbons to create
a beautiful quilt.
Altrusans provided treats of cookies, cake and
juice to the children. They were also each given a goodie bag and two
books. The children were encouraged to read the books and then take them to
their library for others to enjoy. With the assistance of Altrusans from
our Tampa Bay sister club, 250+ books were donated to Great Oaks.
A special thanks to the Girl Scouts of Troop 60 who
assisted in distributing treats and books and helped tie the squares
together.
